A nyolcvanéves kanadai írónő, Margaret Atwood arra szólította fel a különböző nemzetek íróit, köztük a magyarokat is, hogy saját hazájukban ne engedjék csorbulni a sajtószabadságot. Írta a Népszava.
Az elmúlt évek Nobel-díj várományosa, Margaret Atwood egyre gyakrabban hallatja hangját közéleti ügyekben, legutóbb a #metoo-ügyek kapcsán nyilatkozott. A szolgálólány meséje című világsiker szerzője szerint a szexuális zaklatásokat nyilvánosan tárgyaló #metoo-akciók a hibás jogrendszerből adódnak. Mivel a szexuális zaklatási ügyek áldozatai a legtöbb esetben nem kapnak segítséget az intézményektől, ezért az internethez, a teljes nyilvánossághoz kezdtek fordulni. Ez nagyon hatékony eszköz ugyan, de mivel kilóg a jog által szabályozott térből, ezért Atwood szerint még komolyabb problémákhoz vezethet. „Ha túllépünk a jogrendszeren, mert nem hatékony, akkor mi jön helyette? Kinél lesz a hatalom? A szélsőségesek nyernek, és az ideológiájukból vallás lesz, és aki nem követi, azt eretneknek tartják. A regényírók különösen gyanúsak ilyenkor, mert emberekről írnak, és az emberek morálisan bizonytalanok. Az ideológiák célja pedig, hogy eltöröljék a bizonytalanságot.” Atwood szerint a demokrácia visszaszorulásával hasonló belső logika vezet a szólás- és sajtószabadság csorbulásához illetve szándékos csorbításához is. Az írók nemzetközi szervezetének, a Nemzetközi PEN Clubnak jelenlegi alelnökeként levélben fordult a napokban kollégáihoz, hogy felhívja figyelmüket a meggyilkolt vagy kivégzett újságírók életére. „Világszerte nő az erőszakkal elhallgattatott újságírók száma, ezért kerültek ők a Times magazin címlapjára, mint 2018 legfontosabb tanúi.” Atwood szerint semmi értelme azt hajtogatni, hogy „ez nálunk nem történhet meg”, hiszen a jelenség egyre szerteágazóbb, a Trump-adminisztráció listázza, le- és kihallgatja a médiában dolgozókat, és naponta akadályozza a munkájukat, ellehetetlenítve az igazsághoz és az információhoz hozzáférés alkotmányos jogát. Az író egyúttal felhívja a figyelmet a legújabb veszélyre is, a sajtóba vetett bizalmat szétziláló, központilag irányított hazugságok és álhírek (fake news) szaporodására. Atwood szerint ez éppen a demokráciadeficites országokra a legjellemzőbb. Nagyjából ezzel egy időben jelent meg a világsajtóban Michel Houellebecq francia író cikke, melyben leszögezi, hogy az amerikaiak ma már egészen biztosan nem adnák életüket a sajtószabadságért, és ez szerinte szorosan összefügg a jelenlegi vezetés módszereivel. Az író azt állítja, hogy eddig nem ismert Donald Trumpnál jobb amerikai elnököt.
